Exclamation Active Front Headlights (AFS) Warning Light?

I started seeing the AFS Warning light start to flash a couple of weeks ago, it only used to happen at night when the headlights were on and only when I made a left turn. Now the light is on constantly, driving me nuts.

Before I go and spend a bunch of money on diagnostics thought i'd ask if anyone else is having or have had this issue and what the reason might be.

Mine came on the other day. During the day with the lights off and sitting in a parking lot? That one really confused me.
I take it you are out of warranty?

About the only warranty replacement done on my '05 was for a steering position sensor that was bad. It generated intermittent AFS errors.

Check out TSB 06-049. I had reported issues with this to the dealer a couple times, but the light was never active when it was in for service and they couldn't find a fault. Then one day on the way to work, the light came on, I stopped in and left the car running, they plugged it into diagnostics and confirmed the problem. Fixed for free even though I was just out of warranty.

What was the problem? I get it from time to time as well. It seems to me that it's a very circumstantial error. I can go weeks without seeing it, then all of a sudden it won't go away for a day or two.

Interesting, there is a TSB out for it, wonder if there is a way to determine if it was ever serviced for that?

Thanks for the feedback fellas, I get some electrical glitches on it once in a while and was hoping that this would go away as well, but it didn't.

try driving at night and check if it the driver side and passenger side swivels while you drive. if none of them swivel then you got a problem. its like a check engine light but for the active headlight system

When the problem first started the AFS light came on only at night and when I was making a hard left turn, the Left headlight did not "swivel", the Right one did but only before the AFS light would come on, after it does both did not swivel, just point straight. Now that the AFS warning light is on full time day or night, none of the headlights swivel.

your best bet is dealer only because they are capable of doing a software update they claim. casue that was what had happened to my rl but no afs light. only right side would swivel. in your case sounds to me like youre car is having trouble reading the direction youre steering. have the steering position sensor checked out first

I was getting the AFS warning light intermittently for a few months, then it stayed on permanently. Took it in to the dealer who charged my 100 (Canadian) to check it out. The right leveling sensor needed to be replaced (at a cost of 400 Canadian). I have a 2005 that is now out of warranty.

Update:

Got the car back from the dealer, paid them for a diagnostic, they pulled codes B2141 and B2130 - diagnosed that AFS Control Unit and Sensor are bad.
Parts: $684.61, Labor: $449.72, I'm out of warranty and I'm not going to pay a grand to have my lights swivel (paid that premium when I bought the car, not worth the money if you ask me)

I'm going to find a wrecked one and pull this AFS control/sensor out of that, or just trade it in as-is.

Can someone point me in the direction of TSB 06-049? I went trolling through the service bulletins but didn't see this one.

My AFS ('05 RL) just recently started doing the same warning, whether the lights are on or off. But the lights still swivel either way. It also comes on during the day when the lights are off and just restarting the car clears it. Odd.

There is a ride adjustment sensor in the driver's side rear wheel well that might not be working too. It caused the AFS warning thing to go on.

Order Details:

Subtotal $164.48

@FN P90, thanks, also I hear people referring to "steering sensor"-- any idea what that is? Part number would be great if one exists.

Damn. My AFS light comes on about once a week day or night. It came on while still under warranty 2 years ago and the dealer fixed by replacing the AFS unit. Now since February it comes on about once a week. I hate that blinking light. It may be a coincidence but the last two times the only way I was able to get it to stop blinking was to turn car off, turn car to the ON position then off then back to ON then turn the lights on and off 3 times. Like I said may have been a coincidence that it just happed to turn off after this procedure but it might be worth a try if you have one that stays on for days at a time like I do.

Same thing happens to me now at least once a day. Strange thing about it is that when I turn the car on, the right light swivels just fine and no AFS light or warning comes on. I then put the car in drive or reverse, begin to drive, then the warning comes on.

I'm out of warranty as well and do not want to take it to dealer. I read some other post here where someone just played around with the wires and it fixed the issue. I might try that and see what happens.

You should be able to look up the steering angle sensor on acuraoemparts.com, they have a great on-line catalog.

My AFS is now coming on more frequently, it was on the entire trip from W. Pa to NJ, flashing constantly. (even when I shut the car off, it immediately came back on.) What a PIA. I also notice that the right light will flicker when the car is cold and I hit bumps...probably related somehow. I'm bringing it in to dealer next week, they indicated a 10 minute test can be run on it Luckily my extended warranty covers it..probably just paid for itself.

Had this repaired today, it was a "stroke sensor." Covered under extended warranty, receipt shows it would have cost $400 without it. I'm half way to covering my extended warranty and still have two years left.

Looks like part number was 33146-sja-003

Exclamation RL AFS recurring problem!!

I've notice in several blogs that there is a consistent problem with the AFS in the Acura 05"s. My dealer fixed it the first two times I had problems now they charged me $95 to diagnose the problem and another $300 to fix it. I think we all need to start writing the Consumer Product Safely Commission and Angies List to report Acura's obvious product defect

Hey guys, I also have an 05' RL and that damn AFS light comes on often, almost every few days for me as well. It seems to be a common problem with 2005 acura RL's. The AFS warning will come on the dashboard, and stay on for a day or two, even after turning the car off and back on. But then it will go away for a few days and come back on again. It is very annoying !!!

I've replaced all AFS sensors/computers one at a time... and of course only the last one that made it go away. For me anyhow it was the ride adjustment sensor located on the drivers side rear suspension. Replaced it my self the part was around $200 and took 15 min of my time... GL

Mine had been flashing on and off for months and just started to stay on all the time. Went to the dealer yesterday and they replaced the rear stroke sensor under warranty, all good now.

How do we go about disabling the afs? Is there a seperate fuse to pull or can we unplug the afs module (or would that just make the afs light blink anyhow)?

My 2005 rl has the light on constantly, I don't care to spend a few hundred dollars to replace the sensors to fix it.

This is a feature that should have the ability to be temporary or permanently disabled, but once it goes into error mode there isn't much that can be done to stop the flashing light.

This is now bordering on ridiculous. Driving home from Delaware today, the AFS light came on again. Back to the dealer it will go. Really sad that Acura can't fix this on the first shot.

I heard somewhere you can reset the AFS by turning your headlight on to off 2 or 3 times and the light will turn off. Can someone confirm this?

The funny thing is there is an AFS on/off button on the dash already.....to bad you can't just shut it off that way.

Got my car back today. The AFS control unit was replaced, $627, covered under extended warranty. This repair combined with the one a few weeks ago to replace the AFS stroke sensor has now paid for the extended warranty. This experience highlights how important it is to have the extended warranty on these cars, one repair can pay for it. I have two years still left on the warranty.

Had a 2010 TSX loaner for the last three days and while it's a nice car, I'm very glad to be back in the comfort of my RL.

Just got my car back, the AFS warning light was on constantly. Invoice says "Cleared trouble codes and only code the reoccured is B2141 Suspension Stroke Sensor malfunction. Replace stroke sensor, cleared trouble codes and performed AFS learn procedure and function checked and all is OK now." They replaced the sensor located in the rear wheel well, drivers side. $495. Dealer service rep had stated when I dropped it off that he hoped it was this sensor because it is the least expensive of all the alternatives.

Good luck with it...my stroke sensor was replaced and same code was cleared only to have the light come on again a few weeks later. Control unit had to be replaced. warranty repair! if not, about $1000 to fix.

I had my control unit replaced about a year ago under warranty. Now I am experiencing the same intermittent AFS light issue. Dealer claims "stroke sensor". Due for replacement this week...

I was clearing my garage the other day and found the main CPU for the headlights the one located in near firewall/drivers-side... I replaced mine, but the AFS light remained on, so I'm guessing the module is still good. Will give if for free to a good home if you spring for shipping or come pick it up (seattle area)

Do you still have the AFS module? Acura just told me I need a new one but after reading here not sure I should trust them as there is the sensor in the whell well also.
