D-015: Broken wheel lock lug nut...ever hear of it?
Yesterday I was trying to remove one of my wheel lock nuts off the right front wheel in order to try to repair a slow leak in the tire(hole in sidewall, unrepairable )
The nut was on tight...VERY tight, and in trying to get it off, it broke. About 3/4 of the nut was still on, and I ended up having the local dealership remove it with an air-chisel, which of course caused some slight damage to the wheel, but nothing I can't live with.
Has anyone else heard of this, or had it happen? They are the OEM Acura\Honda lock nuts(set of 4, one per wheel) that were included for free when I bought my 06. I have taken them off and on many times before as I rotate my own rubber at home.
Seems strange to me this would break.

OEM style locks are by McGard
Gorilla locks may be a better solution. Look at how they work and you can see the mechanical advantage of the Gorilla locks, even in an over torque situation.

They call for 90 ft/lbs which isn't all that tight when you're using a big lug wrench. It's all too easy to overtighten them. If you do it can become a problem. If you are not using a torque wrench when you're doing these rotations, I'd strongly recommend it.

My local mechanic mentioned to me that on Honda's he's noticed a tendancy for the lug nuts to sort of seize on even when properly torqued.

I'm think the place where I bought the tire overtightened, but was just posting here because I couldn't believe I broke it...I am a big guy(6'8" 260) but I shoulnd't be able to snap hardened steel.

On a side note I know have 4 new tires.
There are General Exclaim UHP ($113) fromTire Rack.
They are so much quieter than the POS OEM Michelins it's amazing!
Now just have to see how they handle in the wet.(Can't be worse than the Michelins were!)

Let us know how the Exclaim's wear in. Also interested in wet weather performance.
They are a deal and on my list. I am leaning towards the Bridgestone Serenity.

I've seen people break lug nuts before and the locking kind shouldn't be any different.
If you are going to be putting locking lug nuts back on your car I have a set for sale (cheap) that I took off my car....

So far the Exclaims are VERY squirmey but that is due to the very deep tread pattern and the pattern looks like they will be good to excellent in wet driving.
Other than that squirm I mentioned, the car handles better.
One thing's for sure....they are much quieter that the POS OEMs.

LOL....sorry for the typo.
You think by now you would have become accustomed to my one handed typing!
Had you considered the BS Serenity? If so, what made you decide on the Exclaims? I know that cost factor makes them very attractive.

The decision was based soley on cost...I had to get 4 new tires asap as I am keeping the car just a bit longer before I trade it in, and I need to get it inspected before the end of August. If I were keeping it longer I would consider the Bridgestones, but I'm really a Dunlop fanatic...the SP8000s I had on my previous RSX was the best tire ever made, IMHO.

Well, it finally rained here in Metro Boston since I purchased the new tires....gotta say I'm happy as a clam with the wet handling of the Exclaims! Still got the initial squirm on turning, but that will go away with some treadwear. So I would call these a bargain even at $113!

I should be fine even if I do keep it into the snow season, there isn't alot of snow in SE MA, and I'm originally from Vermont, so I'm used to it.
