Kinda sucks, I was cleaning the car and I saw a shiny silver thing on my tire (or so I thought it was just on) I pulled on it and found it to be a nail (how I didn't figure that out before I pulled it, I have no idea).

So, I am wondering, have any of you had a tire place repair this kind of puncture and do you trust it, or should I just buy a new tire?

(BTW, These are on my 17" Wheels dunlops)

I've done 4 things with these types of situations and all 4 were fine (these were all on my S2000 as well which seemed to be a magnet for nails). I've:

1. Left the nail in until the tires were bad enough to be replaced
2. Used tire plugs to plug the tire myself
3. Taken it into a shop to have them patch it from the inside
4. Replaced all 4 tires

Like I said all of these worked great and I never had any problems, albeit in the S I went through a set of tires about every 6-8k miles. I always had a tainted feeling riding around with a patched tire or what have you but when again never had any actual problems in doing so. With these tires and their wear being longer you may be ok with getting a new one. I never wanted to get a new one on just one wheel since the others would be worn considerably more in most cases due to the soft compound.

Well, these tires have only about 1k miles on them, so I don't think it would be a big deal to replace just one, would it?

Thanks for your insight stingerbtry. I guess I should go to the tire place and have it checked out and see what they say. I know I can't drive with the nail in there because it IS leaking air - and a considerable amount now. I just checked and the pressure is down to 28PSI from 34 I believe a couple hours ago.

Depending on the tire, a tire shop may not be willing to replace the tire. I have the Michelin Pilot Sports on my Porsche and they will not repair those tires, even for a simple nail puncture. I believe it has to do with the speed rating and the resulting integrity/safety of the tire. I had a nail (screw) puncture in my 2000 RL and had no problem getting a tire shop to repair it.

Also it depends where the puncture is. In my CL-S, I had a nail about an inch away from the wheel on the side of the tire wall. This can't be repaired, I had to get new tire. Also Michelin does not warranty their tires against road hazard, unless you got extra road hazard insurance when you got your car from the dealer. But I think you said you got , so maybe you got road hazard insurance.

andrewgg2 - it is in the treads, so that is why I think they can repair it. I actually dropped the car off at the local tire place about 20 minutes ago and he said he will call me when it is done. Hopefully it will not be a problem

i just had a nail in my tire this morning... took it to the shop, got it plugged and im good to go.

I believe it has to do with the fact that you pulled up in a Porsche and they figure they can soak you for the cost of a really expensive tire....

For a simple nail in the tread that is not near the edge and not in the sidewall, a plug should be fine if it's done correctly. Sidewall or tire edge, of course, is a different story.

They fixed it without any problems. Didn't charge me either Belle Tire (for those of you in the Detroit area)

I've repaired simple punctures myself with good success. Then I had another puncture and I forget why but I couldn't get it done. Took the car to Costco and they repaired it for free even though I had only gotten the tires installed there. Now they require you actually buy the tires there too.
